B. Report of the Committee on Gene Symbolization, Nomenclature and Linkage Groups

New members of the Committee have been elected in the Third Rice Genetics Symposium, as follows: N. Iwata (convener, Japan), I. Takamure (Japan), H. K. Wu (Taiwan), E. A. Siddiq (India), and J. N. Rutger (USA). On newly appointed committee members, we wish to thank outgoing members: T. Kinoshita, K. Takeda, H. K. Wu, R. Seetharaman, and J. N. Rutger. Especially we wish to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. T. Kinoshita, former convener of this committee and present chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the Rice Genetics Cooperative, for his intensive activity and contribution in this committee in the last twelve years.

In Volume 12, Dr. Kinoshita compiled the information on gene symbolization, nomenclature and linkage groups from many aspects. Registration of new gene symbols, therefore, is reported in this volume. In addition, reports from coordinators for some traits are described.

Gene name: gametophyte gene-14 (multiple alleles)

Character expression: Gamete abortion expressed as an allelic interaction such as

gal4-i/gal4-j. Segregation distortion in the F2 lines from three way cross suggests that gamete carrying gal4-j is aborted.

Name of original line: IR36 (gal4-i), Kamairazu (gal4-j) and Ketan Nangka

(gal4-n)

Gene locus: Chromosome 3; locates between Pgil and bcl with 0.2%

recombination value
